What your North Node means

Astrologers often call the North Node your life direction, and many people search for it as their life purpose. It is not a job title. It is a kind of growth: the qualities that feel new and a bit uncomfortable, and that make life feel more like yours once you lean into them.

The South Node, always in the opposite sign, is what you were born good at: your comfort zone. The North Node asks you to grow out of it while keeping its gifts. The sign tells you the flavor of the growth. The house tells you where in life it tends to show up.

Your North Node house

Houses split your chart into twelve areas of life. The house your North Node falls in shows where its growth tends to play out: in love, at work, at home, among friends. Because the houses turn once a day with the Earth, you need your birth time and place to find yours.

  • North Node in the 1st house. Your growth is in becoming your own person: trusting your instincts, showing up as yourself and starting things without waiting for someone else to lead.
  • North Node in the 2nd house. Your growth is in your own worth: earning and keeping your own resources, knowing what you value and enjoying simple, steady comforts.
  • North Node in the 3rd house. Your growth is in curiosity close to home: asking questions, listening, writing, learning and staying in touch with siblings, neighbors and the people around you.
  • North Node in the 4th house. Your growth is in home and family: making room for a private life, roots and feelings, not only for a public role or a career.
  • North Node in the 5th house. Your growth is in joy and self-expression: play, creativity, romance and children, and letting yourself be seen doing what you love.
  • North Node in the 6th house. Your growth is in useful daily work: healthy routines, service, care for your body and doing small things well.
  • North Node in the 7th house. Your growth is in partnership: cooperation, one-on-one relationships and finding out that you do not have to do everything alone.
  • North Node in the 8th house. Your growth is in deep sharing: trust, intimacy, shared money and letting other people's resources and feelings change you.
  • North Node in the 9th house. Your growth is in meaning: travel, study, faith and the big picture, trusting your own sense of truth beyond the details.
  • North Node in the 10th house. Your growth is in your public role: goals, responsibility, career and stepping into your own authority in the world.
  • North Node in the 11th house. Your growth is in community: friends, groups, shared causes and hopes for the future, beyond your own story.
  • North Node in the 12th house. Your growth is in quiet and faith: rest, solitude, compassion and trust in something larger than your own plans.

This calculator uses Placidus houses, the default on most Western astrology sites, and also shows the whole sign house when it differs. Whole sign houses give each house one full sign, starting from the sign on your Ascendant. Neither is wrong; read both and keep the one that rings true.

North Node through the years

The North Node moves backward through the zodiac and spends about 18 months in each sign. These are the most recent periods.

Older dates, back to 1930, are in the full North Node dates table. Dates use the true node at midnight universal time. If you were born within a day or two of a change, your exact birth time and place decide.

Nodal returns: the years your direction turns

About every 18.6 years the North Node returns to its birth sign: around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74. Many people remember these years as a change of course: a move, a new path, an ending that made room.

The North Node is in Aquarius from July 27, 2026 to March 27, 2028. If you were born between March 28, 1952 and October 8, 1953, November 2, 1970 and April 26, 1972, May 22, 1989 and November 18, 1990, or December 15, 2007 and August 21, 2009, you are in a nodal return now. The calculator checks yours.

True node or mean node?

The mean node is an average that slides smoothly backward through the zodiac. The true node is where the node actually is on the day, up to about one and a half degrees either side. Both give the same sign for most people; they can differ for births within a few weeks of a sign change, which is why two websites sometimes disagree. This calculator uses the true node and shows the mean node degree when you add your birth time.

How accurate is it?

The sign lookup uses every moment the true node changed sign from 1930 to 2031, to the minute, from the Swiss Ephemeris. When the node changed sign on your birth date, the calculator says so and asks for your birth time and place instead of guessing.

With time and place, the node, the Ascendant and the house lines are calculated on your device. On 50 made-up births every sign and house matched the Swiss Ephemeris.

Questions

What is my North Node?

Your North Node is the zodiac sign the Moon's north node was in when you were born. Enter your birth date in the calculator above and it shows your North Node sign, with your South Node in the opposite sign. Add your birth time and place to see its house and exact degree too.

How do I find my North Node?

Enter your birth date in this North Node calculator. The North Node stays in one sign for about 18 months, so the date is usually enough. If you were born on a day it changed sign, add your birth time and place. You can also look your date up in our North Node dates table.

Can the North Node show my life purpose?

Many astrologers read the North Node as the direction your life wants to grow toward, and the South Node as the habits you already know well. It is a lens for reflection, not a prediction or a rule.

Do I need my birth time?

Not for the sign. Your birth date is enough, except on the few days a year the node changes sign, and the calculator tells you when that is the case. You do need your birth time and place for your North Node house, because the houses turn once a day with the Earth.

What house is my North Node in?

Open "Add birth time and place" in the calculator, enter your birth time and pick your birthplace. It shows your North Node house in the Placidus system and, if it differs, in whole sign houses. The house shows the area of life where your North Node growth tends to play out.

Which house system does this calculator use?

Placidus, the system most Western astrology sites and apps use by default. If whole sign houses put your North Node in a different house, the calculator shows both. Near the poles Placidus cannot be drawn, so it uses whole sign houses there.

What is the difference between the true node and the mean node?

The mean node is the Moon's node averaged out, moving smoothly backward about 19 degrees a year. The true node is where the node actually is on the day, and it wobbles up to about one and a half degrees either side of the mean. This calculator uses the true node and shows the mean node degree when you add your birth time.

Why does another site show a different North Node sign?

Usually because you were born close to a sign change and the other site uses the mean node, or a table that rounds the change to a whole day. Add your birth time and place here: the calculator then uses your exact birth moment and shows both the true and the mean node.

How accurate is this North Node calculator?

We checked it against the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference most astrology software uses, on 50 made-up births: every sign and house matched, the true node was within 26 arcseconds and the Ascendant within one arcsecond. Your house is only as good as your birth time: a house line moves about one degree every four minutes.

What was I in a past life?

Astrology has no way to prove a past life. Some astrologers read the South Node as the skills and habits you were born already knowing, and call that a past life theme. Treat it as a story to think with, not a fact.

What is a nodal return?

About every 18.6 years the North Node comes back to the sign it was in when you were born: around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74. Many people link these years to a turn in direction. Halfway between, around ages 9, 28, 46 and 65, the nodes sit reversed.

Where is the North Node now?

The North Node moved into Aquarius on July 27, 2026 and stays there until March 27, 2028, when it moves into Capricorn. The South Node is in Leo for the same time.

Is this North Node calculator free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, and it runs on your phone or computer. Your birth date, time and place are not sent anywhere.
