North Node
North Node meaning, in plain words
In astrology, the North Node is the point in your birth chart that many astrologers read as your direction of growth: the qualities you are here to develop. Its partner, the South Node, sits exactly opposite and stands for what already comes easily.

The North Node is not a planet. It is a point where the Moon's path around the Earth crosses the Sun's path through the sky, going north. The South Node is where the Moon crosses going south, always exactly opposite. Astronomers call them the lunar nodes, and eclipses happen near them.
The nodes move backward through the zodiac and take about 18.6 years to go all the way around, so they stay in each sign for about a year and a half. Everyone born within the same 18 months or so shares a North Node sign.
What it means in a birth chart
Many astrologers read the North Node as the direction your soul wants to grow toward. Growth here tends to feel unfamiliar, even a little awkward, at first, and more rewarding over time.
The sign of your North Node describes the qualities you are growing into. The house, which needs your birth time, describes the area of life where that growth shows up: home, work, love, friends and so on.
The South Node: the other half
The South Node is read as your comfort zone: gifts, habits and ways of coping that already come naturally. Some astrologers link it to past lives; others simply see habits formed early in life.
Working with the nodes is about balance. You keep the South Node gifts and add the North Node lessons, instead of falling back on the old habit every time.

The nodal return
Every 18.6 years or so the nodes come back to where they were when you were born: around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74. Many people use these years to look at where they are heading. Take that as a prompt for reflection, not a forecast.

Questions
What does the North Node mean in astrology?
It is read as your direction of growth: the qualities and experiences you are here to develop. Its sign shows the qualities, and its house, if you know your birth time, shows the area of life.
What is the difference between the North Node and the South Node?
They are two ends of one axis, always in opposite signs. The North Node is read as where you are growing; the South Node as what already comes naturally.
Is the North Node karmic?
Some astrologers link the nodes to karma and past lives, with the South Node as what you bring in and the North Node as what you are here to learn. Others read them simply as a growth path. Both are ways of reflecting, not facts about the future.
What is the difference between the true node and the mean node?
The mean node is a smoothed average position. The true node follows the Moon's actual wobble. They are usually within a degree or two of each other, so they only disagree for people born close to a sign change. Our guides use the true node.
