What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, also called your Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn, each for about two hours.
Astrologers read it as your first impression and your way of starting things: the door people walk through before they meet the rest of you. It also sets your houses, the twelve areas of life in your chart.
How to find your rising sign
- Enter your birth date and the birth time from your birth certificate.
- Start typing your birthplace and pick it from the list. The rising sign depends on latitude and longitude, so a time zone alone is not enough.
- Tap Show my rising sign. You also see your Sun and Moon sign for the same moment.
- Read what your rising sign means, then save or share your card.

How accurate is it?
We checked the math against the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference most astrology software uses, on 50 made-up births: every Sun, Moon, Venus, Saturn and rising sign matched, with the worst planet position within 12 arcseconds.
A rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes. If your birth time is rounded, and you land near the edge of a sign, try a few minutes either side.
Questions
What is my rising sign?
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. Enter your birth date, time and place above to see it.
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
No. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so the date alone could give any of up to a dozen signs. Your birth certificate usually lists your time of birth.
Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant are two names for the same point in your chart.
What does my rising sign say about me?
How you come across at first, how you start things and the style you meet new situations with. People who know you well often see your Sun and Moon more.
Why do I need my birthplace?
Because the sign on the eastern horizon depends on where you stand on Earth. The same minute gives different rising signs in London and in Sydney.
How accurate is it?
We checked the math against the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference most astrology software uses, on 50 made-up births: every Sun, Moon, Venus, Saturn and rising sign matched, with the worst planet position within 12 arcseconds. A result is only as exact as the birth time you give.
Is this calculator free?
Yes. It is a free tool with no sign-up, and it runs on your phone or computer. Your birth date, time and place are not sent anywhere.
