What is a Human Design chart?

A Human Design chart, also called a bodygraph, is a map drawn from the moment you were born. It shows nine shapes called centers, the channels that connect them and 64 numbered gates. From that picture it names your type, your strategy, your inner authority and your profile: how your energy tends to work and how you make your clearest decisions.

Human Design was first published by Ra Uru Hu in 1992. It mixes ideas from astrology, the I Ching, the chakras and Kabbalah, but you do not need to know any of them to use your chart. More: what Human Design means.

What you need to make one

• Birth dateSets where the Sun and the slow planets were.
• Birth timeAs exact as you can. The Moon moves through a whole gate in about 10 hours, so an hour can switch a gate, and with it a channel, a center and sometimes your type or authority. Your profile changes about once a day, so it only moves if you were born close to a switch.
• BirthplaceSets your time zone, including daylight saving time in the year you were born.

Defined and open centers

A colored center is defined. It works in a steady, reliable way, every day, and other people feel that energy from you. A white center is open or undefined. It has no fixed way of working, so it takes in the energy of the people around you and can feel it even stronger than they do.

White centers are not weak spots. They are where you learn the most about other people, and where you can become wise over time. The trouble starts only when you try to act as if borrowed energy were your own, for example rushing because you picked up someone else's pressure. Strictly, a white center with no active gates is called open and one with some gates is called undefined; day to day they work the same way.

Two moments, one chart

Your chart combines two moments. The Personality side is your birth: the part of you that you know. The Design side is about 88 days earlier, when the Sun was 88 degrees back: the part others often see first. In charts, Personality is drawn in black and Design in red.

Gates, channels and centers

Each of 13 points (the Sun, Earth, the lunar nodes, the Moon and eight planets) lands in one of 64 gates, and each gate has 6 lines. Two gates at the ends of a channel make the channel defined, and the two centers it joins become defined too.

Type, authority and profile

Your type comes from which centers are defined and how they connect: mostly whether the Sacral is defined, and whether a motor reaches the Throat. Authority follows a fixed order of defined centers. Profile is the line of your Personality Sun and the line of your Design Sun.
