Human Design
The 9 Human Design centers
A Human Design chart has nine centers, the shapes on the bodygraph. A colored center is defined: it works in a steady, reliable way. A white center is undefined: it is open, takes in energy from other people, and can become a place of wisdom.

A defined center is part of who you consistently are. An undefined center takes in and amplifies the energy of the people around you, so it can feel different from day to day. Many teachers say the undefined centers are where you are most easily pushed off course, and also where you can become wise about other people.
The nine centers
- HeadA pressure center for inspiration and questions. Undefined, you may feel pressure to answer every question that comes your way.
- AjnaAn awareness center for thinking, opinions and making sense of things. Undefined, you may feel you must sound certain.
- ThroatCommunication and action: where energy becomes words or deeds. Undefined, you may feel pressure to speak to be noticed.
- G centerIdentity, love and direction. Undefined, you may wonder who you are or where to go, and place and people matter a lot.
- Heart, or EgoA motor for willpower, worth and promises. Undefined, you may feel you have something to prove.
- SacralA motor for life force, work energy and response. Undefined, you may not know when enough is enough.
- Solar PlexusA motor and awareness center for emotions, which move in waves. Undefined, you may avoid conflict and take on other people's feelings.
- SpleenAn awareness center for instinct and intuition: an in-the-moment sense of what feels safe and right. Undefined, you may hold on to things that are no longer good for you.
- RootA pressure center and motor for drive and stress, the push to get things moving. Undefined, you may rush to be free of the pressure.
Motors, awareness and pressure
Four centers are motors: Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart and Root. Three are awareness centers: Ajna, Spleen and Solar Plexus. Two are pressure centers: Head and Root. Whether a motor connects to the Throat helps decide your type.

Questions
How many centers are there in Human Design?
Nine: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart (Ego), Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen and Root.
What does an undefined center mean?
It is open: it takes in and amplifies energy from other people. It is not a flaw; it is where you learn about others.
Is it bad to have many undefined centers?
No. It means you are more open to your surroundings, so the people and places you choose matter more.
What is the difference between an open and an undefined center?
Some teachers call a center open when no gates in it are active, and undefined when it has a gate but no full channel. Both are white on the chart.
