How to read a Human Design chart
A Human Design chart, often called a bodygraph, looks busy at first. Read it in this order: type, strategy, authority and profile, then the centers and channels. The first four tell you most of what you need for daily life.

Your birth date, birth time and birthplace. Birth time matters more in Human Design than in many systems: a difference of an hour or less can change your profile, a channel or even your type. If you are not sure of the time, use your best guess and keep that in mind.
1. Type
Your type is the headline: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor or Reflector. It describes how your energy works.
2. Strategy
Each type has one strategy, a simple way to meet life. Generators respond. Manifesting Generators respond, then inform. Projectors wait for the invitation. Manifestors inform. Reflectors wait a lunar cycle.
3. Authority
Your inner authority is how you make your clearest decisions: emotional, sacral, splenic, ego, self-projected, mental or lunar.
4. Profile
Two numbers, like 2/4 or 5/1. They describe the role you tend to play and how you learn.
5. Definition
Definition describes how your defined centers connect. Single definition means they all form one connected group. Split, triple split and quadruple split mean two, three or four separate groups. Reflectors have no definition. People with a split definition are often said to feel most whole with people who bridge the gap.
6. Centers
The nine shapes are the centers. A colored center is defined and works in a steady way. A white center is undefined: open, taking in energy from others.
7. Gates and channels
The numbers on the centers are the 64 gates. When the gates at both ends of a line are active, that channel is defined; there are 36 channels. Black numbers are your Personality side, calculated from the moment of birth, which you are aware of. Red numbers are your Design side, calculated from about 88 days before birth, when the Sun was 88 degrees earlier, which works more out of sight.
8. Incarnation cross
Your incarnation cross comes from the gates of your Personality and Design Sun and Earth. It is often described as a life theme. Many readers leave it until the basics feel familiar.

Questions
What is the most important part of a Human Design chart?
Most readers start with type, strategy and authority. They are the practical part you can try in daily life.
What do the black and red numbers mean?
Black is the Personality side, from the moment of birth. Red is the Design side, from about 88 days earlier, when the Sun was 88 degrees back.
What do the colored and white centers mean?
Colored centers are defined and work in a steady, reliable way. White centers are undefined: open to the energy of the people and places around you.
Do I need my exact birth time?
It helps a lot. Some parts of the chart change within an hour or less, so a close time gives a more reliable reading.
